Is It Cheaper in Japan? Brand-by-Brand Price Guide (2026)

Oct 19、2026Spiddy Ng

Quick answer: Japanese brands such as ASICS, Onitsuka Tiger, Seiko, G-Shock, Shiseido and Royce are usually cheaper in Japan because there is no import margin and visitors can shop tax-free. Western brands sold through Japanese distributors are only sometimes cheaper. Always compare the yen price with your home price on the same day.

Last updated: 20 Oct 2026, by Spiddy Ng

Summary box - Usually cheaper in Japan: Japanese brands (Onitsuka Tiger, ASICS, Anello, G-Shock, Seiko, Shiseido, Kosé, Fancl, Royce) – home-market pricing, more stock, outlet discounts, plus 10% tax-free for visitors. - Sometimes cheaper: Western brands sold through Japanese distributors (NARS, Estée Lauder, Lush, Kipling, Tag Heuer). The weak yen helps, but Japan list prices are often raised to compensate. - Rarely worth it: Fast fashion (H&M, GU, Puma basics) – small savings, limited sizes. - Always check: today's exchange rate, your home country's duty-free allowance, and whether the store offers tax-free (免税) at the till. - Quick verdict: Buy Japanese-made brands in Japan; compare first for everything else.

1. How do we compare prices?

Every brand page on Japan Truly compares the Japanese retail price (in yen, including 10% consumption tax) with the official price in other markets such as the US, UK, Singapore, China and the Philippines. Three things decide whether something is genuinely cheaper:

  • The exchange rate. A product priced at ¥10,000 costs very different amounts in dollars depending on the week. We list yen prices and you should convert using today's rate.
  • Tax. Japanese shelf prices include 10% consumption tax. Visitors on a temporary visitor stamp can usually buy tax-free in participating stores when they meet the minimum spend.
  • What you pay when you get home. Your own country's customs allowance may add duty to expensive watches and bags.

Verdict: a "cheaper in Japan" price only counts after tax-free and your home duty are included.

2. Are Onitsuka Tiger, ASICS and Anello cheaper in Japan?

Japanese brands are where Japan wins most clearly. They are priced for the home market, stores carry more models and colours, and there are outlets.

Onitsuka Tiger. Prices vary; compare Onitsuka Tiger's Japan and home-country sites on the same day. Japan also sells "Nippon Made" lines that are hard to find abroad. Full guide: Are Onitsuka Tiger shoes cheaper in Japan? and Onitsuka Tiger outlets in Japan.

ASICS. Generally cheaper in Japan, especially at outlets and during sales; Japan-only colourways appear regularly. Full guide: Is ASICS cheaper in Japan?

Anello. The Japanese backpack brand is cheaper at home because there is no import margin; you'll find it in Loft, Tokyu Hands and station shops.

Verdict: ✅ Cheaper in Japan – buy here, ideally tax-free or at an outlet.

3. Are watches like G-Shock, Seiko, Tag Heuer and Cartier cheaper in Japan?

G-Shock (Casio). Typically cheaper in Japan than in Europe, Mexico or Singapore, and Japan gets domestic-market (JDM) models first. Big electronics stores such as Bic Camera and Yodobashi add point rewards on top of tax-free.

Seiko. Japan prices for Seiko 5 and Presage lines are usually lower than overseas, and Japan-exclusive references exist. See Is Seiko cheaper in Japan?

Tag Heuer. Prices vary by model and rise often; check Tag Heuer's Japan site. With tax-free and a weak yen this can beat US pricing, but you may owe duty at home on a watch this expensive.

Cartier. Luxury maisons adjust Japanese prices several times a year. Savings depend almost entirely on the exchange rate. See Is Cartier cheaper in Japan?

Watch brand Japan advantage Watch out for
G-Shock JDM models, points at electronics stores Check the model isn't a grey import
Seiko Lower home price, exclusives Warranty is often Japan-only
Tag Heuer Tax-free on a big ticket Home duty, frequent price rises
Cartier Weak yen Price rises in Japan

Verdict: ✅ Japanese watch brands – yes. ⚠️ Swiss/French luxury – only after you compare on the day.

4. Are Shiseido, Kosé and Fancl cheaper in Japan?

Drugstores (Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Sundrug, Welcia), department-store counters and airport duty-free all sell Japanese skincare, and prices are generally lower than overseas.

  • Shiseido – lower prices at home, plus drugstore-only sub-brands (e.g. Senka, Elixir) that cost much more abroad.
  • Kosé – Sekkisei and drugstore lines are much cheaper in Japan than imported.
  • Fancl – preservative-free skincare and supplements; our comparison found Japan cheaper than Singapore and Taiwan.

Verdict: ✅ Cheaper in Japan – the easiest win on any shopping trip.

5. Are NARS, Estée Lauder, Lush and Innisfree cheaper in Japan?

These brands are imported, so Japan doesn't always win.

Prices vary by product and change often; check each brand's Japanese and home-country sites on the same day.

  • NARS – savings depend on the product and the day's exchange rate; compare before you buy.
  • Estée Lauder – with the weak yen and tax-free shopping, Japan is usually cheaper for most shoppers; compare prices on the day.
  • Lush – generally cheaper in Japan than most countries except the UK, its home market.
  • Innisfree – a Korean brand; Korean visitors will almost always pay less at home.

Verdict: ⚠️ Compare first – savings are small and change with the yen.

6. Are H&M, GU, Puma, Kipling and Rimowa cheaper in Japan?

  • H&M – slightly cheaper than the US on some basics, but sizing runs small.
  • GU – Uniqlo's sister brand is Japanese, so it is cheap at home; ranges differ from overseas stores. See also Is Uniqlo cheaper in Japan?
  • Puma – no meaningful saving except Japan-exclusive collaborations.
  • Kipling – savings vary by model; check the retailer.
  • Rimowa – the weak yen can make Japan competitive, but compare with your home price on the same day.

Verdict: ⚠️ Mostly not worth planning around, except GU and Japan-only collabs.

7. Is Royce chocolate cheaper in Japan?

Royce is a Hokkaido brand, and prices vary; check Royce's official store. Even with price rises, Japan remains much cheaper; New Chitose and Haneda airport shops are the most convenient places to buy, and Nama chocolate needs to be kept cool.

Verdict: ✅ Much cheaper in Japan – buy at the airport on your way home.

8. How does tax-free shopping in Japan work?

  1. Look for the "Japan Tax-Free Shop" sign or ask for 免税 (menzei).
  2. Bring your passport – the physical passport with your entry stamp or landing record.
  3. Spend the minimum in one store on one day (check the current minimum before you shop).
  4. Consumables (cosmetics, food) may be sealed in a bag you shouldn't open in Japan.
  5. Department stores often have a central tax-free counter, and some offer extra visitor discount coupons.

Paying by card is easy almost everywhere; Visa, Mastercard, JCB and Amex are widely accepted, and IC cards like Suica work in many shops. A data eSIM helps you check prices online in-store.
