Japanese Names Of Characters From Mobile Suit Gundam Series

Amuro Ray (アムロ・レイ Amuro Rei)

Amuro Ray is the main protagonist of the series. He is part of the Earth Federation and is the son of Tem Ray.

He is gifted when it comes to mechanics and he is somewhat of a nerd. He is also able to communicate telepathically with Lalah Sune.

At the start of the series, Amuro is a regular boy who lives in one of the only few space colonies that are not affected by the One Year War.

However, as the series progresses, he is seen getting more involved in the war. The first mobile suit that he piloted was the RX - 78 - 2 Gundam, with which he was able to destroy two Zakus after looking in the piloting manual just once.

In the series, Amuro and Char Aznable share a mutual hatred for one another. This hatred only grows stronger after Lalah Sune is killed.

Amuro ears himself the title of “White Devil” (白い悪魔, Shiroi Akuma) because of his incredible abilities at mobile suit combat in any range and his skill at piloting the RX - 78 - 2 Gundam.

Bright Noa (ブライト・ノア Buraito Noa)

Bright Nao is also part of the Earth Federation and at the beginning of the series, he doesn’t seem like an important character because he is only an officer candidate without a commission.

But when Char Aznable attacks Side 7, he takes on the role of captain after Captain Paolo Cassius succumbs to his injuries.

In the series, Bright is portrayed as a disciplined and loyal soldier. He has proved his leadership qualities over and over like when he took charge of the White Base and when he commanded the Argama.

He is one of the most experienced field commanders when it comes to mobile suit warfare. Under his command are some of the best pilots like Amuro Ray and Kamille Bidan.

With a strong moral compass, Bright is often seen disciplining and correcting his crew members. He is not a Newtype but does possess some traits of the same.

Sayla Mass (セイラ・マス Seira Masu)

Sayla Mass was born as Artesia Som Deikun (アルテイシア・ソム・ダイクン Aruteishia Somu Daikun) and is the sister of Chasval Rem Deikun, better known as Char Aznable.

When the Principality of Zeon was established, Jimba Ral took her in along with her brother. Later she was adopted by the Mass family to avoid the persecution of the Zabi family and changed her name to Sayla Mass.

Sayla serves as Bright Noah’s communication officer and because of a lack of experienced personnel to protect White Base, she later becomes a combat pilot.

Char Aznable (シャア・アズナブル Shaa Azunaburu)

Char Aznable was born as Casval Rem Deikun (キャスバル・レム・ダイクン Kyasubaru Remu Daikun). He also has been identified by other names in the series like Édouard Mass (エドワゥ・マス Edowa~u Masu), Quattro Bajeena (クワトロ・バジーナ Kuwatoro Bajīna) and The Red Comet (赤い彗星 Akai Suisei).

He is the son of Zeon Zum Deikun and struggles under the pressure to succeed his father. He is a very competent soldier and his time at the Zeon Space Defence Military Academy helped him better his skills.

He is extremely tactful and is exceptionally good at high speed manoeuvring. He is also a good leader and a gifted orator.

He is often seen challenging Amuro. They both share an intense rivalry and are constantly competing against one another. This rivalry eventually costed Lalah her life.

Degwin Sodo Zabi (デギン・ソド・ザビ Degin Sodo Zabi)

Degwin Sodo Zabi is part of the Zabi family and was also the dictator of the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War.

He was an ally of Zeon Zum Deikun and played a role in establishing the Republic of Zeon. Before Deikun’s death, Degwin was his chief of staff and claims that he was named as successor by Deikun on his deathbed.

Though it was never proved, in the series, many believe that Degwin had something to do with the death of Deikun and may have caused it.

Lalah Sune (ララァ・スン Raraa Sun)

Lalah Sune was an Indian character in the series. She was shunned by the general staff in the Zeon army because of her origin and age.

She has very high Newtype abilities and leaves researchers shocked. She was able to destroy the Earth Federation Forces’ ships and mobile suits with her all range attacks from a far distance.

She was eventually killed in battle by Amuro Ray. Her death was an accident as Amuro was aiming for Char’s Gelgoog. But instead, Lalah threw herself in the way of the deathly blow in order to save Char and died. Her death leaves a lasting impact on both Amuro and Char and the hatred that they have for each other only grows because of this.

Kycilia Zabi (キシリア・ザビ Kishiria Zabi)

Kycilia Zabi was the only daught of Degwin Sodo Zabi.  She had much political ambition and tried to compete with her older brother, Gherin. However, since he was older, he was more experienced and already had a head start in politics.

She was smart and had a lot of knowledge about Newtypes and mobile suits. She was able to keep up with new and changing technology and even use the intelligence that she gathered against the Federation.

Some of the elite mobile suit units that she created are Char Aznables’s, the 300th Independent Corps, the Chimera Corps, and the Midnight Fenrir.
