The Tokyo subway system is incredibly efficient but can be intimidating at first! Here's what you need to know:
Two Main Systems
- Tokyo Metro: 9 lines (Ginza, Marunouchi, Hibiya, etc.)
- Toei Subway: 4 lines (Asakusa, Mita, Shinjuku, Oedo)
- They're operated separately but interconnected with JR trains
Payment Options
- IC Cards (highly recommended): Suica or PASMO - rechargeable cards that work on all trains, buses, and even convenience stores
- Day Passes: Available for unlimited rides (Tokyo Metro 24/48/72hr passes)
- Single tickets: Can be purchased at machines, but IC cards are much more convenient
Navigation Tips
- Google Maps: Works excellently for route planning in Tokyo
- English signage: Stations have English signs and announcements
- Station numbers: Each station has a letter-number code (e.g., G-09 for Ginza Line)
- Color-coded lines: Each line has a distinctive color
Important Etiquette
- Stand on the left side of escalators (right in Osaka!)
- No talking on phones in trains
- Put phones on silent mode
- Priority seating for elderly, pregnant, and disabled passengers
- No eating or drinking (water is usually okay)
Practical Tips
- Rush hour (7:30-9:30 AM, 5-8 PM) gets VERY crowded
- Last trains run around midnight
- Station exits can be confusing - check which exit number you need beforehand
- Many stations are massive complexes with underground shopping
First-timer tip: Get a Suica/PASMO card at the airport - it'll save you so much hassle!
