Ryokans In Japanese Alps
Kanko Ryokan
Imagine dipping in a warm and cozy onsen with a beautiful view of the Japanese Alps. And even in the right season, you might see the blossoming Sakura trees just lingering around the vicinity. Kanko Ryokan has that to offer for you!
The rooms will make you feel like you’re still staying at a traditional Japanese lodging with shoji sliding doors and tatami floor mats. The design of the rooms are very warm-looking and cozy to complement the views outside.
And as mentioned earlier, the onsen is one of Kanko Ryokan’s main highlights because it overlooks Mount Norikura. It’s very spacious as well so you don’t have to worry about rubbing elbows with other guests.
If you want to have more privacy to enjoy the rejuvenating onsens in Kanko Ryokan, you can always reserve a private hot spring bath for free but it’s advisable to do this alongside the booking of the rooms because the slots get filled up very quickly due to public demand.
There are three types of rooms in Kanko Ryokan and they all accommodate 4-5 guests which means it’s not optimal to travel here alone. But don’t worry, as a solo tourist, there are groups of other tourists going to Kanko Ryokan as a collective group.
The three rooms are the Japanese Style Room and the Japanese Style Room Half Board in the Main Building and in the Annex.
Room prices start at 18,000 Yen or $135 USD per head every night and this is depending on the date of booking which means the prices might be cheaper when you book. Check-in time is 3:00 PM while check-out time is 10:00 AM.
In your room, you have LCD TV, private bathroom and toilets, air conditioning unit and a heating unit. Extra furniture or fixtures are up for request prior to booking or when you’re in the room at the day of booking.
Breakfast comes with the room rates but there are other extra options you can go for if you want to try more food in Kanko Ryokan. The Ryokan offers a Hida Beef dinner that you can also get alongside your room.
If you want to try other restaurants, Takayama Warajiya is only an eight minute walk away while the Sushi Dining-Nob is a bit farther since it’s a 17-minute walk from Kanko Ryokan. There’s a Morning Market nearby too and it’s only a 16-minute walk in Miyagawa.
Kanko Ryokan is only a 10-minute bus ride from the JR Takayama Station. There’s free parking on the property if you bring a car. There’s also free Wi-Fi around the whole Ryokan including the rooms.

Takayama Ouan
An award winning Ryokan in the Japanese Alps, Takayama Ouan is the place to be if you visited the area. We had to make sure we mentioned Takayama Ouan because of the beautiful sights and experiences that it brings to the table.
The Ryokan design itself is pretty normal and ordinary looking but what sets Takayama Ouan apart from any other lodging in the Japanese Alps is the natural and open-air hot-spring bath onsen in the rooftop of the place. This onsen has an unobstructed view of the city all around.
For the rooms, Takayama Ouan has integrated traditional Japanese housing with a bit of Western ideals. The rooms still have tatami-style flooring but the beddings are lowered just like how it’s set up in Western beds.
There is also a private bathroom in every room, a television, tea-maker, and a refrigerator so you don’t have to stroll outside for tea and storing of food and beverages.
As mentioned earlier, there are public onsen baths for the use of the general public, but you can always opt for a private onsen bath if you want more privacy. All of the onsen baths have a majestic view of the city and the mountains so you won’t miss out whatever onsen bath you choose.
If you’re not feeling like bathing in an onsen, you can always go for a relaxing massage at their on-site salon in Takayama Ouan.
There are three types of rooms and they also have a good view of the city or the mountains. The rooms are the Standard Double Room, Twin Room, and the Deluxe Double Room. You can opt to add breakfast into the room rates or not.
The price for the rooms are fluctuating depending on the date of booking and the website or partner you’re choosing to book Takayama Ouan from. But the prices per person range from 10,000 - 20,000 Yen or $74.52 to $149.00 USD. Check-in time is 3:00 PM and check-out time is 10:00 AM.
A breakfast buffet option can be included in the room rates if you want to at an additional cost.
Takayama Ouan is just a few meters away from a few restaurants like Le Midi, Harubaru, and Ajikura Tengoku. All of these restaurants are within walking distance from the Ryokan. If you want to visit historical sites like Yoshijima Heritage House, it’s only 1.1km away from here.
Takayama Ouan is only a few minutes drive away from the Takayama Station so it’s very accessible to any type of transportation.

Hodakaso Sanganoyu
If you’re up for the extra travel time and adventure, then Hodakaso Sunganoyu should be up in your list for Ryokans in the Japanese Alps. It might be a bit farther away than other Ryokans but the experience will truly be worth it.
Hodakaso Sanganoyu is 60 minutes away from the JR Takayama Station and 30 minutes away by bus in the Kamikochi area. You can say that this Ryokan is literally a part of the Japanese Alps already.
Despite being deep in the Japanese Alps, Hodakaso Sanganoyu still offer rooms that provide a traditional Japanese feel with the tatami-style floorings, shoji screen doors and futon beddings. They also offer a Western-style private bathrooms and every room has a good mountain view.
The special thing about Hodakaso Sanganoyu is that the rooms are very spacious and compared to other Ryokans, it’s not clumped. The fixtures and furniture don’t take up the entire space so you have a lot of room to work with.
Just like the other Ryokans in this article, Hodakaso Sanganoyu also offers a beautiful onsen bath for everyone to use and it’s separated by gender. However, you can reserve your own private onsen bath if you want more privacy.
Hodakaso Sanganoyu also offers a sauna and a massage service to complete the relaxing experience in the Ryokan.
There are four types of rooms namely Economy Japanese-style room, Twin Room with Tatami Area, Japanese-style room, and Family Room with Tatami Area. These rooms can accommodate 3-5 guests.
The prices of these rooms are fluctuating depending on the date of booking and the platform that you’re booking the rooms in. The estimated range of price per person in Hodakaso Sanganoyu is 20,000 - 27,000 Yen or 150$ - 200$ USD depending on the reasons above and room chosen.

Since Hodakaso Sanganoyu is located deep in the Japanese Alps, there are no other restaurants nearby so the only food option is the food provided by the Ryokan itself.
Despite being farther away from the other shops and places, there are still a few sights that are near the place. The Hirayu Onsen Ski Place is only 12 minutes away and it’s a beautiful place to ski down the Japanese Alps.
The Hirayuo Falls is also only a few minutes away from Hodakaso Sanganoyu since it’s only 1.8km away. The Hirayu Otaki Park is only a few minutes away as well and it’s a great place to bring your family or children in.
