5. How does tax-free shopping work at outlets?
Premium Outlets' tax-free stores ask you to show your passport when you pay, and the purchase must be made at the same store on the same day (Premium Outlets services). Japan normally requires ¥5,000 or more (before tax) per store per day. From 1 November 2026, Japan uses a refund system: you pay the tax-inclusive price, then confirm the purchase at customs when you leave Japan to get the tax back (JNTO, Japan Tourism Agency).
