Japan's Kit Kats are legendary for their mind-blowing flavors! While classics like matcha and strawberry are always popular, Japan offers wild options too. Autumn Sweet Potato Kit Kat

I am someone who loves sweet potato in its vegetable form and therefore, I thought I must try out how a sweet potato-flavored Kit Kat would taste. Well, I was pleasantly surprised by how vegetable-flavored chocolate could taste so good!

Baked Custard Pudding Kit Kat

This one was super yummy! It definitely had a good flavor of custard and the custard flavor did not overpower the chocolate but was just in the right proportion to give it that subtle aftertaste. I simply loved it!

When I bit into this Kit Kat, I honestly felt like I was biting into a graham cracker itself. It was really nice and for sure one of the most unique flavors of Kit Kat out there. This one falls under the top 10 good flavors for me personally.

Red Bean Sandwich Kit Kat

Stuffed in daifuku or mochi (rice cake), is the only way I had tasted the red bean sauce and it gave the mochi a pretty unique flavoring. Well, as for it flavoring a Kit Kat, not so much. Definitely not going to be buying this one again.

Cookies and Cream Kit Kat

I love the flavor of cookies and cream in chocolates. I had previously tried the Hershey’s cookies and cream flavor and loved it, so I decided to try out the Kit Kat in this flavor, and yes, one of my top favorites for sure. It tasted super amazing!

Shizuoka Wasabi Kit Kat

If there’s one flavor I am absolutely never buying again, it is this one! Well, it is my fault to have tried this flavor out even after disliking wasabi.

This Kit Kat was spicy, yes, spicy! Honestly, spice and chocolate do not make a great combination after all.

Pistachio Kit Kat

If you’re looking to try a new flavor, but wish to play it safe, then this one’s it. There’s nothing much that can go wrong with the pistachio flavor right? It was tasty, no doubt, but it was pretty basic I’d say.

Tokyo Rum Raisin Kit Kat

I was quite impressed after tasting this flavor of Kit Kat, it was much better than I imagined it to be and I could actually taste the rum, more than the raisin in fact, which made it taste very unique.

Crème Caramel Kit Kat

Crème Caramel was a flavor I had high expectations of because I usually like crème caramel pudding, so I was excited to try this Kit Kat out. Well, it wouldn’t be one of my favourites for sure, but it wasn’t too bad either, slightly too sweet in my opinion.

Strawberry Daifuku Kit Kat

I really like how daifuku or mochi tastes. They are traditional Japanese rice cakes. I have also tried traditional strawberry daifuku as well, but in the Kit Kat form, it was not too great, pretty average I’d have to say.

Sweet Sake Kit Kat

Sake is an alcoholic beverage made in Japan. But I hadn’t ever tried it plain but heard it is quite strong and has a distinct flavor.

Since this Kit Kat is sweet sake flavored, I tried it out and well, the flavor of the alcohol really hits you at your very first bite. Definitely did not appeal to my tastebuds.

Sakura Kit Kat

I am a huge fan of all things sakura. Food items, tea, desserts, whatever it is, I like the flavor of sakura and when I saw the limited edition sakura Kit Kat, I bought it without a second thought and of course, I loved the flavor just as I imagined.

Daily Nuts and Cranberry Kit Kat

Well, I have to admit that the reason I tried high and low to find this Kit Kat flavor was because of how unique the Kit Kat bars looked! I was impressed; it actually had nuts and cranberries on top and tasted super delicious.

Sakura and Roasted Soy Bean Kit Kat

Since this flavor contained sakura, it enticed me to try it out, but I should have known better than to try out chocolate with soybean in it! It was so not to my liking and the soybean flavor overpowered the flavor of the sakura completely.

This was my very first try at tasting chocolate with salt in it and I was pleasantly intrigued by its taste. The flavor was distinct and while the salinity doesn’t immediately get to you, it’s that subtle aftertaste that makes this flavor tasty.

Why Is Kit Kat Popular In Japan?

Since the 1970s, the chocolate Kit Kat has been sold in Japan. Yes, nothing but regular chocolate-covered wafers.

But then, of course, because it's Japan, they decided to take “innovation” to a whole new level and up their sales like never before.

Popular KitKat Flavours In Japan

The only way they could do this was by creating new flavors that people would get enticed to try!

So after the year 2000, they slowly started creating new flavors of Kit Kat bars and as of today, they have tried making hundreds of Kit Kat flavors.

But here’s the catch, not all flavors are always available on sale, because some flavors are seasonal or limited edition ones, which are on sale for a short period of time before they leave the market, while sometimes, some flavors are restricted to sales only in a particular region in Japan.

Well, nevertheless, we cannot deny how innovative the company can get, to be able to create and produce so many exotic and unusual flavors of Kit Kat that truly excite the people.

My Experience Trying Out Types of Kit Kat In Japan

So I must admit that there are some of these flavors I tried out simply out of curiosity because of how rare the flavor is and I really hoped it would be nice (even though some weren’t palatable to my tastebuds).

Well, here’s my review after tasting 18 different types of Kit Kat in Japan.

The Final Takeaway

If you’re looking for flavors that are a must-try (and some of my favorites), then I’d definitely say – baked custard pudding, graham cracker, cookies and crème, rum and raisin, daily nuts and cranberry, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate orange, and sakura flavored Kit Kat.

The best places to look for different types of Kit Kat are convenience stores, supermarkets, bus terminals, train stations, airports, etc.

But since you do not get all the flavors all around Japan, as some are limited edition or restricted to a particular region, you could try shopping online on sites like Rakuten, Amazon Japan, Yahoo Store, etc.

I’m sure many of you might be having the urge to try out some of these exotic Japanese Kit Kat flavors, especially if you’re a Kit Kat lover.

Well, if you’re making a trip to Japan any time soon, make sure to lay your hands on at least a few of the unusual Japanese Kit Kat flavors and for those of you out of Japan, you could always try ordering them online and satisfy your cravings!
