Types Of Dehumidifiers For Wet Clothes
There are two main types of dehumidifiers for wet laundry: compressor and desiccant. And there’s a third type of dehumidifier for wet laundry that is a combination of the above two types.
These two types of dehumidifier for wet laundry can be compared to the features found in washers and dryers.
#1 -- Compressor Dehumidifiers For Wet Laundry
The compressor method is similar to the “Heat Pump” feature in the washing machine and dryer. The desiccant method is similar to the “Heater” feature in the dryer.
The compressor system compresses air and converts the internal moisture into water. In the desiccant system, the moisture is absorbed by a desiccant material called ‘zeolite’.
The moisture is evaporated by a heater and condensed in a heat exchanger that turns it into water.
The compressor method is disadvantageous in the sense that the structure is complicated and cannot be made smaller, hence the price is generally high.
Another reason is that it doesn’t use heat; when the temperature of the room is low, the dehumidification process doesn’t kick in.
Therefore, it's not suitable for people who mainly use dew condensation countermeasures during the winter.

#2 -- Desiccant Dehumidifiers For Wet Laundry
The desiccant system has a simple structure and is easy to manufacture smaller parts. Since it evaporates and the moisture is condensed using a heater, the power consumption is high and the room temperature increases.
Therefore, the recommended model of dehumidifiers for wet laundry, especially during the rainy season, is the compressor dehumidifiers for wet laundry.
Hybrid systems combine both, which functions by switching between compressor mode and desiccant mode.
Which Dehumidifier Is The One For You?
If you want to dry thoroughly choose the compressor method if on a budget.
We have introduced five models so far, but none of them are cheap.
Nonetheless, desiccant-style models that can be bought at the 10,000 yen range aren’t recommended as it will be quite hot during the rainy season and the summer season.
If you dry your clothes in a narrow room such as a bedroom and if you want to dry the clothes well, I would recommend using clothes drying dehumidifier.
If the model adopts the compressor method, it will definitely dry your clothes if your clothes are directly in the path of the wind.
It’s also fine not to have a sensor feature. If the sensor function is available, it dries more reliably, but for those whose budget is tight, it isn’t an absolute requirement.
Things to consider when buying a dehumidifier for wet laundry:
- Energy efficient: It’s always advisable to go for machines that are energy efficient so that it doesn’t cost a lot of money just to run it and also saves electricity. Research properly on what kind of dehumidifier the products are and if they consume a lot of energy to run.
- Timer feature: timer feature is a great option as it will automatically stop when the laundry is dry and you wouldn’t have to constantly keep an eye on the dehumidifier.
- Laundry boost mode: Look for dehumidifiers that have specific laundry modes which enhance the dehumidification process and are good for clothes that are in confined rooms or small spaces.
- Size: Pick a size that is perfect for you and your family. If you have a large family and pick a small dehumidifier then it might be a little problematic as you’d have to run several rounds to dry all the clothes. Go for a 10-20 litre dehumidifier if you have a huge family however, if you’re alone 5 litres dehumidifier is good enough.
What size dehumidifier do I need to dry clothes?
A dehumidifier of 10 - 12L per day is more than enough if you're looking for a dehumidifier just to dry clothes.
Is a dehumidifier better than a tumble dryer?
Dehumidifier is definitely better than a tumble dryer because the energy consumption is much lesser and it's cheaper. Hence, the more economical option here is buying a dehumidifier.
How to use dehumidifier for drying clothes?
Use a clothes' drying rack to hang your wet laundry. Place the rack in the same room as the dehumidifier. It's preferable to place the dehumidifier is a smaller room where there isn't a lot of soft furnishings.
Make sure you seal off the room as well, by closing the door and windows. This way you can make sure that your dehumidifier is working most efficiently.
What does auto dry mean on a dehumidifier?
The auto dry feature sets the dehumidifiers fan into auto mode and automatically selects the desired humidity of the room. Once the desired humidity is reached, the dehumidifier shuts off. This is an important feature to have in a dehumidifier as you can save on energy.
How to reduce humidity in laundry room?
You can use a dehumidifier to reduce the humidity in your laundry room by setting the dehumidifier to maintain a humidity of less than 50% in your laundry room. When you're not using the dehumidifier, make sure you leave the window and door open for good ventilation.
Does a dehumidifier help with laundry?
Yes, dehumidifiers help with laundry to remove excess moisture fast and effectively. It increases the speed of the fan to dry the air in the room which allows the laundry to dry quickly eliminating the time moisture is in the air.
How long does a dehumidifier take to dry laundry?
A dehumidifier takes about 3-5 hours to dry the laundry as compared to a tumble dryer which only takes about an hour.
How do you use a Japanese dehumidifier?
Japanese dehumidifiers are used pretty much in the same way as air conditioners with a dehumidifier button. Press “joshitsu” (除湿) or “dorai” (ドライ) to set temperature accordingly.
Which is better: a tumble dryer or dehumidifier?
Dehumidifiers take a longer time to dry the laundry than a tumble dryer but the former is more energy efficient as well cost effective.
